About Småland

Småland is a heavily forested landscape and also a landscape with many lakes. The largest urban centres in Småland are Jönköping, Växjö and Kalmar.

Småland is forests, meadows, pastures and sparkling lakes. The forests are miles wide and invite hiking, mushroom and berry picking. Here you can experience absolute silence, interrupted only by the chirping of birds and possibly the trampling of the king of the forest – the moose.

This is where Emil in Lönneberga and the Bullerby children lived their lives in Astrid Lindgren’s books. The red cottages and pastures look just as they did then. The characters and environments come to life in Astrid Lindgren’s World in Vimmerby.

The name Småland comes from merging several “small countries” into one. The concept of Smålanders has been around since the Middle Ages. According to legend, toughness, ingenuity and enterprise characterise the 12 small landscapes of Småland. Small business is still thriving today.
